Funnies...

Today, amid all the crazy, wild weather nonsense (its raining non-stop down here) and the absent teachers, and the ever present negative person, I laughed.

Because of our shortage on teachers today, during my break I was filling in for the Kindergarten class for a 30 minute segment. I decided to do some music and movement activities since they were going to be cooped up all day (due to the rain).

So, I introduced this new song. It is called "He is the rock" and there is a part where the kids chant that phrase.

Seeing a teaching moment before me, I asked the room full of five year olds who is the rock we were singing about.

"Jesus," rang a chorus of angelic voices. They were quite confident, even though this is their first answer to almost every questions I ask!

Desiring to deepen their spiritual knowledge and understanding, I kept pushing.

"What does is mean that Jesus is our rock? Does it mean He looks like the rocks we see outside?"

With the same conviction and certainty as he answered the first question, one little boy said, "He is a rockstar."

And the entire class agreed with him, wholeheartedly.

I was reminded of how easily we accept the truth of others, instead of seeking it ourselves. When there is someone else, who you trust and believe to have more knowledge and wisdom than you, sometimes we simply accept their truth as our own. You see, the little boy who so confidently told me Jesus is a rockstar, is by far the smartest kid in the class. He is the only one who can read. And when you are in kindergarten that is quite a big deal!

As I tried to figure out how to respond to Jesus the rockstar, I started to realize there was no way I could tell these kids that Jesus is not a rockstar.

And the more I thought about it, the more I began to wonder if perhaps I was the one who had learned something new in Kindergarten today.

I wonder if that new interpretation of Scripture would qualify as the "binding and loosing" we're supposed to be doing...

I, for one, think it is fabulous that kindergarteners think Jesus is a rockstar. :)
