The ultimate gift...

Today was one of those days where you know it was bigger than your feeble mind can really comprehend, at least at this time.

I pulled off the biggest surprise of my life.

I disciple a group of fourth graders after school once a week. They use their gifts and talents to lead our chapel worship every day, of every week. This has been a lot harder for them then they ever imagined it might be. There are lots of older kids in chapel (all the way up to tenth grade) and they are really at that age where they are trying to figure out how to be cool, how to fit in, and how to honor God all at the same time.

I love these kids. I love their hearts. I love the relationship I have been able to build with them. And I really love how often I see the Spirit grab a hold of their powerful lives.

I wanted to bless them for their service to the Lord.

I wanted them to taste the goodness of their Savior.

I wanted them to know that a life of following after Christ can hold trials, but the goodness of God is beyond our wildest imagination.

So, what was the surprise?

I got to take them out of school for the whole day. They don't have to make up any of their work. We played games outside, and then we went out to lunch. I let them have as many cokes as they wanted. We ate at Red Robin, where they serve you bottomless fries (yup, that is right, as many french fries as you can eat!)! Then, a wonderful friend made a cake for them.

The restaurant gave them balloons. They got to take their cups home. They were floating on cloud nine.

And then, we went to see a movie!

At lunch one of my students said, "I can't believe this is really happening!"

They were so grateful. They were so amazed.

The movie was 'The Ultimate Gift' and if you have not seen it, you must go and see it. The mom who accompanied us told me after the movie that she had no idea the movie would be that powerful. She had cried through several different gifts in the movie. (I cried lots the first time I saw it too.....today, just once....its the good crying though!)

On the way home, one of the students in my car said, "I still can't believe this happened!"

I smiled. My joy was unmeasurable.

And I pray their journey with the Lord will hold many, many more experiences where all they can muster is, "I still can't believe this happened!"
