Now I am not a fan of many aspects of country life, but the longer I serve at Creekside, the more attached I become to some of the ways of living the country life. There are some things that I wonder if I will ever become accustomed to entirely.
Today provided me a perfect example of this country life I simply do not "get", at least not yet.
I arrived at church quite early for our second day of Day Camp, to be greeted by a special friend. Do you see him?
Now, I can guarantee you we, the chickens and I, are not friends.
I don't like animals, but I have decided after today I really don't like chickens. There were three of them, who all seemed quite intent on complicating my morning-which I had perfectly planned out, without including them.
However, one seemed quite intent on entering the building. In fact, he was outraged when I shut the door on him and proceed to tell me about it for at least ten minutes. Have you heard a rooster from a mere five feet away? Let me tell you, distance is your friend in this situation.
The funny thing was this particular rooster did not quite understand a couple things. a) I wasn't letting him in the building b) He was seeing his reflection and not another feathered friend, c) he couldn't walk through the glass.
If you have ever wondered if you are a member of a country church or a city church, let me answer that question for you.....
...you know you go to a country church when the chickens walk through the same door as the church-goers...
Didn't want this third chicken to feel left out. My mother informed me that because these chickens "roamed" all the way over to the church, that she believed this made them free range chickens!
So, do you go to church in the country or the city?

I go to this really, really country church with chickens, a hog, and a stocked pond. I don't mind....I have a 2X4 in my trunk for when my car gets stuck in mud in the parking lot. And its great b/c I can bring my puppy to learn how to swim in that thar pond sometime.
okay, ashlee...that is just too funny. i can only imagine the reaction you had when you first saw the chicken. it just makes me laugh. if it were me, i would try to make friends with the chickens just because i like anything with fur or feathers...but i know i'm odd and most people wouldn't attempt to be friends with a chicken. he was a very cute chicken, though........
and lisa, i know i don't know you except through what i read on ashlee's blog...but i'm way impressed by the fact that your church has a hog. that just sounds fun and quite entertaining. i'd probably try to make friends with it, too...
I'm with Terri - the thought of you meeting up with those chickens is just hilarious!
The thing I really appreciate about our country church is that my kids are seeing people who live completely differently than the way we live.
ber...what??!?! not the amazing children's minister? I am shocked!
Terri, you have to come out and meet all the church animals...there are ducks too!
Lisa, I want to see Sahara swimming in that thar pond real soon...ya hear?!!?
I laughed out loud with this one. I can picture you as well, mostly b/c I would be having the same exact reaction. We don't have chickens at our church, but we have them in our neighborhood. I'll be driving to the grocery store and all of a sudden a chicken will run out in front of me...just doesn't seem right!
Eh, the children's minister's alright. I mean, it's not like it's a hard job, even I have done it.
(Lest I get flamed, I'm joking!) :)
Hey Terri, It certainly is entertaining that our church bought a hog. I wasn't there for the hog fun, and we have since donated it away, but I would have tried to make friends with it too!
(Also, Ashlee has been modest about our hog-owning adventures; my church is Ashlee's church too, but we couldn't get her to be friends w/ the hog.)
