I was going to take a hiatus because the Ike drama is in full swing around here... but alas, I need something to take my mind of all this hurricane preparedness. It seems like our local officials have done a really excellent job of planning through all the details since our failure with Rita. We are "sheltering in place" (staying at our home) as instructed by officials. They are predicting this thing will hit tonight and I will get online as soon as that is a possibility, which may not be before Monday.
All of that to say that Round Five of the contest might not appear tomorrow. I know, I know, how will you ever survive?
Five Random Facts about you. That's right, I want to know five random things that most people don't know about you.
5) I fractured my wrist in the fifth grade. I got a hot pink cast, and was the coolest kid in class with that cast. How did I do it? Playing tag in the back yard, we had a small exercise trampoline underneath the slide and I slid down, jumped, and flew to my demise.....
4) "Low" is one of my favorite songs.
3) I love, love, love black jelly beans. But, I don't really care of the other colors.
2) I once won some money in an economics contest in high school. I didn't actually do anything in the contest, the two other teammates just needed a third person to enter the contest and they offered me a third of the winnings if I would go. Easiest $100 I ever made!
1) I was a synchronized swimmer back in the day. Seriously, I took synchronized swimming lessons with a group of four other girls for a time in my young life. One of team mates had national success at the amateur level. I was practically in the Olympics. Or something...
And now, let's hear those things you never talk about.....come on...you know you want to share!

oh goodness, now i have to REALLY think! i'll be back...
1. I lived in a car in Australia for a couple months. By choice. It was actually fun.
2. I love love love love Peeps (you know, the marshmallows covered in colored sugar that you get at the holidays). I have found that people either love them or absolutely hate them. Incidentally, the only jelly beans I hate are the black ones - I'd give you all of mine, Ashlee!
3. I am a huge fan of Bhangra dancing and music from India. I even dragged Mike to George Washington University's "Bhangra Blowout" dance competition last year.
4. My first car was a 1991 bright red volvo sedan - one of the really boxy ones - with black leather seats. I loved that car.
5. This is my first time posting on a blog - EVER! Hi Ashlee!
What song "low"? I'm thinking Flo Rida here... You likin some Apple Bottom jeans, ashlee?
5 Random Facts...
1. My first car was a red Firebird. When I moved to college I passed it onto my sister.
2. I broke my nose when I was a kid. Our RV went over a big bump and I flew off of my bunk....nose---->stovetop
3. I graduated from high school when I was 17 and from college at 19. I was in a hurry to work I guess?
4. As a kid I loved to fish- both freshwater and at the ocean. I had a fancy Mickey Mouse fishing pole with a kid's button-release reel.
5. I played the violin in middle school and junior high.
Geez, I think you're in danger of winning you're own contest here. I'm not sure anyone can beat synchronized swimmer.
1. I have never ice skated, been to Disneyworld or Disneyland, or seen Titanic, and I have certainly not ice skated at Disney while watching Titanic.
2. The hot dogs at my elementary school used to make my sister (Azina) and me barf. One time, we were driving to see my dad at work after we got out of school, and I hot dog puked on my shirt. My mom pulled into a gas station, made me take off my shirt, and made me wear Azina's pink coat the rest of the way home.
3. At the risk of being unoriginal, my first car was a 1991 blue Buick Regal that was literally a grandma car before we owned it. While en route to a friend's wedding, I looked down, didn't notice the car stopping in front of me, rear-ended the guy (in a white Chevy Tahoe that drove away just fine), and thus ended my poor Buick's tragically short life. So distraught was I at the loss of my travelling companion, I wrote a eulogy for dearly departed "Bluey" in the next issue of the newsletter for the church where I was working. The eulogy coincided perfectly with the beginning of 40 Days of Purpose, so I connected the dots at the end with some two-sentence explanation of how we should be as lucky as "Bluey" to live a life of such distinguished and faithful service to the very end. Really, it was about the car.
4. One of my favorite activities in the world is spinning my nieces and nephew on the laminate floor of my sister's living room. The children love it, and it gives Amber three child-sized circles on the floor that she doesn't have to sweep.
5. My first experience with international travel was at the ripe old age of five. My dad took me because I was the only one whom my parents deemed "old enough" that had not yet been. I'm pretty sure this earned me several sibling-rivalry-inspired beatings for years following.
1. i cannot eat or drink anything blue.
2. i once had my tongue pierced. for a short period of time in college. ashlee, do you know anyone else who did? hehe....
3. i have never passed the beginner level of swimming lessons (but i can swim very well).
4. when i was a little girl (about 6), i forced a friend of mine to eat tree leaves....they were salad and we were playing restaurant, OK?
5. my favorite crayola crayon color is midnight blue--it has been since i was a kid....it is no longer included in the box....i snag them whenever i see one....and i took one from church once!
Oh Terri, don't miss your chance to enter!
I know another faithful blog reader who loves peeps vanessa, but not me. Just black jelly beans, so save me yours!!!
Lisa...Rv, stovetop, broken nose...youch!
Raj, a very good point I had not even considered myself....I could win my own contest! Perhaps I need to recount the votes on the previous contests.....hmmmmm.
Oh Heidi, you little crayola stealer! I actually think it was probably hard for you to come up with things I may not have heard before....impressive!
And sheesh, your friend totally needed to their veggies before going home.... :)
1.) As a high school senior, I *accidentally* did the hokey pokey in front of Darren Hayes from Savage Garden, while volunteering at a karaoke booth with the children's hospital for the San Antonio KAAB Fair. I didn't realize who the fella all dressed in leather was until the four-year-old I was singing with ran away with the mic and I looked up to see Darren smiling and clapping, while standing next to my highschool yearbook/newspaper supervisor, who just looked plain stunned, with her camera in hand.
2.) As a tyke, I used to pretend I was a lamb and went around baaaa-ing at everyone.
3.) I sometimes don't realize that I'm dancing while shopping. But if a song with a really good beat comes on (like the Applebottom or the Umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh songs), my hips have a mind of their own. Watch out, store displays in pyramidal-formats!
4.) I just got re-addicted to Ebay and am waiting for three auctions to end (yay for early Christmas shopping!)
5.) I am considering becoming a vegetarian.
One more thang - I think it's really neat that once again, your blogspot is rallying folks together and offering a very welcomed distraction to the forecast. Our prayers are with you folks in Htown!
Thanks Cindy! You are always so kind about this little ol' blog! It has given me a great outlet from non-stop media coverage of Ike. Thanks for your prayers, we certainly need them!
i don't think i will be winning the contest :) but have been thinking of you all week, ashlee. my in-laws were supposed to fly through houston to come see us sunday...but that isn't happening now! so you are in our prayers! love you
Here I am!! Okay then...
1. In the 6th grade I played the violin. At the Christmas concert that year, we combined 2 whole middle schools together for one huge concert. In the middle of the concert...all was quiet...then I accidentally knocked over the this one girl's viola onto the nice tile floor. EVERYONE heard it. and EVERYONE looked at me. I went and hid in the bathroom until the concert was over. I cried too.
2. My first baby doll was a doll I name "Baby". I played with her a bunch and she eventually had to "go away" cuz her head kept coming off. To appease me, Santa brought me a new baby doll...her name was "Sissy" cuz she was, of course, Baby's sister. I still have Sissy. It's true.
3. I was very prissy as a young child. My mother tells me I refused to wear pants until I was about 10...always had to be skirts or dresses. Now, I pretty much never wear skirts or dresses. It's always pants.
4. In the 5th grade, two other friends of mine and I formed a club called the "Texas Triplets" though we looked nothing alike. I was the treasurer and kept our money in an old metal band aid container that I wrapped with Christmas paper. Our goal was to one day have enough money to buy pink satin jackets with "Texas Triplets" on the back. It never happened.
5. I LOVE drummer boy quarters. Everytime I see one, I try to save it. I get so excited.
Phew.
Oh, I thought of another...
When I was about 6, I married the boy across the street (Jason) in the back of my dad's pick-up truck. Jason played the groom and the minister. Truly, it was romantic. After the ceremony was over...we heard clapping in the background. We turned around and his entire family had been watching from across the street. I. was. mortified.
Good times.
