Okay, this one is in honor of Hurricane Ike, and in an effort to ask that you all would join me in praying he turns to the south, drastically and quickly!
What five things would you pack (non-essentials) if you were making a mandatory evacuation from your home? Don't tell me clothes and toiletries and important papers....blah, blah, blah. Things that are important to you, but maybe serve no real survival purposes...
Does that make sense?
Okay, so here is my list....
1) My laptop, boring I know. But I would totally take it.
2) I have a file of letters that are very special to me. This I would want to take, for sure!
3) I have two pictures that I love (okay, really I have lots of pictures I love but two I wouldn't know if I could get other prints of). One is of the first night of soccer practice last season where we turned on the outdoor lights. It is breathtaking, and means so much to me in a personal and spiritual way. The other was a gift, and it is a picture of a beach we stood on in Cancun. It is breathtaking in a whole different way...
4) I would probably want to take at least one of the nativities in my collection. It is an emergency situation, so that is the only reason I wouldn't take them all. Don't make me pick one now, it is hypothetical, right?
5) Geez, this is hard. Ugh. I will have to get back to you on this.....
Okay, your turn.....let's hear it!

1. Sahara the dog
2. Sphinx the cat
3. My journals & film negatives box (usually conveniently stored together)
Aside from important papers I think that's actually it...
Here goes...
1. Casey (cuz she's so dang cute and she's funny! I'm sure having to evacuate...I'd need some funnies.
2. Cell phone...to call all my fab friends and family so they wouldn't worry and hearing their voices would make me smile.
3. Wedding album/bouquet...I waited a very long for the right guy and that day was super special. I love looking at the album and flowers.
4. A container...this particular one contains items that the girls (including my niece) have made for me over the past couple of years. Always brings a smile to my face.
5. Any pictures I could get my hands to hold of my entire family. Heck, I'll just throw 'em in another container and take that!!
Wow, this was harder than I thought it would be. Yeesh.
let's see...
1. my photo disks and photo boxes (which are all together in one place)--you just can't replace that stuff
2. this treasure chest of wonderful memories that my best friend had made for me many years ago...it's full to the brim of things that remind me that people love me
3. my willow tree nativity set--replacable, yes, but very special b/c of the people who have given me the pieces
4. the journals that i have been writing in for each of my boys since i found out i was pregnant with them
5. (i know this is silly and totally not practical, ok?) if i could, i would love to take the crib that kavin is currently sleeping in...here is why: my grandpa and dad made it when I was a baby and it is absolutely beautiful and an "heirloom" to me (albeit a "young" heirloom)
ok...i think that's it. i'm sure joe would love that last one!
1. my parents (as old and wrinkled as they are, I'd hate to see something happen to them)
2. cell phone & charger
3. laptop & cord
4. DVDs
5. book and/or notebook
That's more than 5, but I bet most of it would fit into one large garbage bag! Okay, not the parents.
Heidi, its a good thing you aren't in a coastal city, because I don't think Joe would be up for moving that crib everytime you needed to evacuate for a hurricane.... he he!
I guess I was considering my cell phone a necessity, but some of you mentioned it so I guess it could be my fifth item.
I am actually going to be in Dallas this weekend, so I am also hoping it diverts it attention away from Texas! Here is what I would take...
1. My hubby, cant leave him behind!
2. Cell phone to contact my parents and friend!
3. Scrapbooks, they may take alot of room, but they are irreplaceable!
4.A notebook of letters Brenden(hubby) and I exchanged during his 3 deployments oversees. These are precious letters that include alot of memories and emotions...I could never leave those behind!
5. I-Pod Video for the movies and music!
I have trouble accepting that food, clothes, important papers, etc. are considered necessities and spouses aren't, so I'm not going to put Lindsey on my list even though I would definitely take her.
1. Laptop, Cell phone, Digital Camera (I also think the cell phone is a "duh" item, so we'll just assume the gadgets go together.)
2. Our "box" of sentimental romantic stuff.
3. DVD collection (especially The West Wing)
4. A box of "the" books. (Velvet Elvis, Blue Like Jazz, Life of the Beloved, Jewish New Testament Commentary, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, etc.)
5. Coldplay collection (including the vinyl of Viva La Vida and other rarities I've picked up along the way - don't judge me)
We don't have our wedding pictures in prints yet, so the laptop covers that angle.
I probably stretched that list about as far as it will go.
Lindsey gets her five too, right? If this list is for both of us, I'd have to change a few things, starting with tossing the books and taking her wedding dress.
Raj, you got some serious points for being willing to toss your books for the wife's wedding dress... I should have clarified that each person does in fact get their own five items.
Although, in the case of some of you, I am wondering what you would be traveling in that would carry you, your spouse, and the items... :)
Okay, it was a close toss up between two of you, but I think the thing that put the winner over the edge was me trying to picture the conversation that would take place when Heidi tells Joe she wants to strap that crib on top the suburban before they drive to safety!!!!!
So, Heidi, YOU ARE THE WINNER!!!!
woo hoo for heidi!!! that actually would make for a funny site...
"Joe, the crib IS going. Strap it to the suburban."
"Heidi, honey, we need to leave now...there is no time to strap that crib to the suburban. We must leave before we are under water."
"Joseph, are you hearing me? The crib IS going. Don't you want our boys and other future kiddos to have this special memory of being in this crib that I was in as a wee babe (sniffle, tear)...it means soooo much to me...(sniffle, tear, snot)
"Absolutely, dear. The crib will go. You are right."
Oh, the love. Way to go, Heidi Jo. I'm so proud.
thank you...thank you. good thing i don't live in hurricane country...and since tornadoes do not give ample warning, i can assure all of you that it will not go to the basement with us! :) i can't wait to see my prize! i love the contests!!
