Twelve things I love about Colt McCoy...

Although last night's victory over Texas Tech was way too close for comfort for this Longhorn fan, I have to brag on my new favorite player....

Colt McCoy.

You see, this was supposed to be Vince's year. His heisman, a second national championship title, and sealing the deal on records in the NCAA and UT history for decades to come. Hundreds of thousands of faithful Longhorns had already started planning the glory of this year.

And then, the unthinkable happened. Vince decided to go pro.

Great panic and fear rippled throughout the state. We did not have a quarterback on our team who had ever taken a snap at the college level. That is right. Reigning national champs, without a quarterback.

The race between a true freshman, and a red-shirted freshman began. The Lone star state waited with great anticipation....would Mack struggle wtih his choice as he did with Simms and even Young? Was this season over before it began?

And Colt emerged the strong leader very few expected him to be.

So, here is my first (of many) odes to Colt McCoy.....

12) He is a Texan, through-and-through. His dad put soil from Texas underneath his wife's hospital bed because they were out-of-state when Colt entered this world. He was, therefore, born on Texas soil.
11) He is proud of his family, and gives great amounts of honor and respect to both his parents in the media.
10) He is an optimist. In the face of great adversity (you have no idea the way every thing he does is analyzed throughout Texas) he always believes the best is possible.
9) He is a comeback king. There is no give-up in his bones...
8) He is a true leader. Even though he is younger than almost every other starter on the team, they respect and follow his lead.
7) He is humble. He often says how he is just thrilled to be a Longhorn, never mind getting to play on a Nationally ranked football team.....
6) He has the cutest smile....even if he looks like he is twelve!!!
5) He doesn't complain about everyone constantly second-guessing whether he is going to be good enough to fill Vince's shoes.
4) Watching him play reminds you why you love college football....
3) He looks good in burnt orange.....who doesn't?!?!?!?
2) Did I mention the story about Texas soil?
1) He understands that everything in this world is the Lord's.....after each game, when the national media spotlight is on him, he gives God the glory. But not in rapper fashion.... Last night he said he wanted to give God the glory because He had given him the ability to play. WOW! The interviewer did not know what to do....he fumbled another football question out and Colt continued, "This team never quit. They have great determination, and everyone did their job." He never took an ounce of credit.

And he is 19.

He is a roaring lamb.

Hook 'em Horns baby, Hook 'em Horns!

I can't remember exactly how it came up, but in English class we were talking about Texas and sports and religion and my English teacher said, "In Texas, sports and religion are almost the same thing."

It made me think of you and smile. :-) I will never understand why these people are important, but it's funny to me that you do.

Okay, I am sorry, I love you dearly Ashlee, but that story about the soil is just more than I can handle. I mean, I guess I should expect nothing less from people who actually name their child Colt McCoy, not that it's a bad name, it's just a very Texas/football name. But that whole business about the soil would have required planning and forethought, and it just proves that state adoration runs much deeper than I ever suspected and much much deeper than I will ever understand...

I will say that he does seem like a decent guy to me, and I can get behind that because there are so few of them in football.
